South Side Symphony Orchestra is delighted to present Whispers and Whirlwinds, a captivating concert showcasing a rich and dynamic repertoire, conducted by guest maestro Leanna Puttick. The performance will take place on 31 August, 2025 at The Theatre at Corpus Christi College. This will be an afternoon of vivid orchestral music, with pieces that range from mysterious and haunting to incredibly majestic.

Camille Saint-Saëns’s Danse Macabre is a tone poem which vividly evokes the image of Death, calling skeletons forth to dance at midnight. A haunting solo violin motif mimics a rattling skeleton and with the work’s eerie xylophone effects, Saint-Saëns combines spooky storytelling and playful orchestral colours. Antonin Dvořák’s Sixth Symphony reflects the composer’s Bohemian roots, blending rich folk-inspired themes with classical symphonic structure. The work bursts with vitality, heartfelt lyricism, and rhythmic drive, capturing both the pastoral beauty and spirited energy of love for his homeland. It is regarded as one of Dvořák’s most uplifting and optimistic symphonies. Sergei Prokofiev’s Montagues and Capulets from the ballet Romeo and Juliet is one of the most iconic themes in ballet music. This powerful piece captures the tension and grandeur of feuding families from one of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedies. With its dramatic brass, heavy rhythms, and dark intensity, Prokofiev evokes the ominous presence of conflict and pride and is unforgettably gripping. Carl Stamitz’s Flute Concerto in G Major is a sparkling example of the Classical concerto form with its elegance, charm and lyrical quality. The solo flute shines with graceful melodies and delicate ornamentation, supported by the orchestra’s light and agile texture. It’s a delightful showcase of the Mannheim school’s balance and poise, which Stamitz’s father founded.

South Side Symphony Orchestra is a not for profit, community ensemble. Established in 2011, the orchestra is based in Melville with over 60 enthusiastic, vibrant musicians from all sorts of backgrounds united by their passion for sharing classical music with the community.
