South Side Symphony Orchestra will present From Vienna to Video Games, an exciting concert celebrating the enduring power and versatility of orchestral music, on Sunday 30 August.
Conducted by guest conductor Paul de Cinque, the concert will take audiences on a musical journey spanning more than 250 years of history. From the elegance of Mozart and Johann Strauss II to the epic worlds of World of Warcraft and Raiders of the Lost Ark, the varied program showcases the remarkable versatility of the modern symphony orchestra.
Audiences can expect a rich mix of orchestral favourites, including Brahms’ spirited Hungarian Dances Nos. 5 and 6, Márquez’s vibrant Danzón No. 2, Strauss’ sparkling Die Fledermaus Overture, and Sam Smith’s Writing’s on the Wall. The program also features music from gaming and film, demonstrating how orchestral music continues to inspire audiences across generations and genres.
The performance will feature two guest soloists. Seven-year-old pianist Maya Portella-Schulz will perform the first movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23, while tenor Vin Trikeriotis will perform two of opera’s most beloved arias: Donizetti’s Una Furtiva Lagrima and Verdi’s La Donna è Mobile, as well as Sam Smith’s Writing’s on the Wall and The Impossible Dream from Man of La Mancha by Mitch Leigh.
Established in 2011, South Side Symphony Orchestra is a not-for-profit community ensemble based in Melville, bringing together musicians from diverse backgrounds with a shared passion for live orchestral performance. This season the orchestra will support another not-for-profit organisation, the Foster Care Association of Western Australia (FCAWA) by donating a portion of the proceeds from this concert, helping the organisation continue its vital work supporting foster and kinship carers and the children and young people in their care. Each year, South Side Symphony Orchestra invites a guest conductor to lead its third concert of the season, providing musicians with the opportunity to work with a different artistic voice while continuing the orchestra’s tradition of presenting engaging and accessible orchestral performances. This year’s concert is led by respected Western Australian conductor Paul de Cinque. Paul says the concert offers audiences the opportunity to experience both classical masterpieces and modern favourites in a single performance. “Often when you go to an orchestra concert, you either hear a classical program, or a pops program. For this concert, we decided to give you a little of both. Stretching from classical works by Mozart and Brahms all the way through to video game music via John Williams, I’m sure there is something in this concert for everyone. Plus, the chance to see a seven-year-old piano soloist wow you with her performance of Mozart will be the icing on the cake!”
