Winner of SSSO’s Inaugural Young Composer Competition

As SSSO is committed to providing a platform to young musicians it decided to hold a composers competition. To our delight the response was very positive and the adjudication panel were excited to deliberate over many wonderful entries from young Western Australian composers. The panel were overwhelmed by the effort and generosity each composer undertook with their works.

There was one composition which shone and the panel were unanimous in their decision. We have pleasure in announcing the winner of of SSSO’s inaugural Young Composer Competition is Wafi Zainal. Entitled ‘Duet of Hearts’ this piece has an uplifting energy about it, with robust countermelodies giving all instrumentalists a good workout. There are several distinct themes to the composition including a tango. We are sure members of the Orchestra and audiences find it most entertaining.

Later in the year composers of unsuccessful entries have been invited to workshop with the Orchestra as a way of supporting their skill development.

‘Duet of Hearts’ will have its World premiere performance as part of SSSO’s Australian Made concert 2pm Sunday 2 August at Fremantle Town Hall. We hope you can come along to hear this wonderful composition and enjoy a full programme celebrating all Australian composers.

Congratulations Wafi!
