Established in February 2011, the South Side Symphony Orchestra is the newest community orchestra in Perth. The SSSO was created to address the absence of a community symphony orchestra ‘south of the river’. Now, through the SSSO, musicians and audiences can enjoy classical music in their own backyard. SSSO is quickly gaining a reputation from community groups and audiences of being a valuable cultural asset in the region.
SSSO is based centrally in Melville where rehearsals are held on a weekly basis. As we are dedicated to cultural enrichment in the region, SSSO will be found performing well beyond our Melville base. Exciting, quality performances are kept affordable and easily accessed for audiences throughout the southern metro area.
SSSO performs 4-5 concerts each year. We aim to bring audiences exciting concert programmes which support Perth’s emerging professional musicians, and in diverse and interesting venues. Our ‘Australian Made’ performance on 2 August 2015 included the world premiere of SSSO’s inaugural Young Composer Competition played alongside an all Australian composers line up of music. In November 2015, SSSO returned to Serpentine Airfield for a twilight Gala performance and later in the month performs with the Revellers Shakespearean theatre. Each year SSSO also dedicates one performance to child focus charity groups.
SSSO has a regular membership of over 50 enthusiastic musicians from diverse backgrounds. Members are required to have attained 5th Grade in AMEB (or equivalent) and over. Amongst us there are keen amateur, student and professional players. What unites us is the passion and pleasure in making music with and for others. We are delighted to have enthusiastic musicians join where vacancies for instruments exist. Apart from making music, SSSO aims to create a friendly atmosphere and holds several social events through the year for members.
We are grateful to our dynamic Musical Director, Aaron Wyatt for his expertise in developing the Orchestra. Through weekly rehearsals he has challenged and inspired us in preparation for our performances.
If you would like to become a part of SSSO, there are currently vacancies in strings, trumpet, percussion and horn sections.
